UN Arabic Language Day

The Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used daily by more than 400 million people. World Arabic Language Day is celebrated every year on 18 December since 2012. It is the language of the Qu’ran, the Holy Book of Islam.

At Together Dementia Support we have a number of Asian Muslim members who meet, along with others, on Thursdays at the Amani centre, Moss Side. The group Pyaari Yaadein (meaning ‘old memories’) is a bespoke project we developed to work with people from a South Asian Background. We undertake dynamic activities celebrating their rich cultural heritage and embracing British culture. We encourage physical and mental development in our sessions. On a weekly basis we develop a theme for the group and explore ideas and concepts around these themes relating to a hybrid of South Asian culture and Britishness. We promote full participation in the group, depending on individual ability, however we are an inclusive group that accommodate individuality. The sessions are  run by trained professionals that are proficient in various South Asian languages and dialects to facilitate ease for the participants. We provide a safe environment for South Asian people living with Dementia and their carers.
